SELECTED UNIVERSITIES

Seventeen universities, for comparison

The UK G5, Hong Kong's top three, two in Singapore, North America and Australia's Group of Eight. Each guide covers three things only: what the university is, who it suits, and the usual directions of study. For global rankings, see Partner schools.

IHOW TO READ

Settle three things before turning to the universities

I

Set the radius first

The UK, Hong Kong and Singapore, North America and Australia differ widely in visa windows, length of term and where a graduate can land. Think first about where the child is likely to live over the next five years, then turn to the universities.
II

Then read the character

Small-group colleges, a large city university with no walls and a science and engineering specialist make for entirely different daily lives. Whether the child will be comfortable is worth settling before how well known the name is.
III

Lock the subject last

Within one university, different departments are entirely different applications. Look first at what the department teaches and which courses are needed before entry, then write the reach, safe and match tiers into the plan.
