ITHE UNIVERSITY

About the university

Several campuses along the Thames. Medicine is around Guy's and St Thomas', while law and war studies are mostly on the Strand.

I

King's College London was founded in 1829 and is one of the earliest colleges of the University of London. Its campuses spread along the Thames: the Strand is near the river and the legal quarter, while Guy's, St Thomas' and Denmark Hill carry much of the teaching in medicine and life sciences. Lectures, library and lodging are often not on the same street, so commuting is part of daily life.

II

The undergraduate medical route is long; chemistry and biology prerequisites and interviews are scheduled separately and cannot be prepared like an ordinary science application. Law is in The Dickson Poon School of Law, where case analysis and writing are central. War Studies is an undergraduate degree particular to King's, three years, looking at conflict through history, politics, strategy and ethics, based on the Strand close to Whitehall. International Relations is a different timetable; do not merge it with War Studies into one application.

III

In the London application season it is often compared with UCL and Imperial. Fix the department and campus first, and talk about the name afterwards. For those who want a single campus and few changes of transport, life across several campuses will be uncomfortable.

Who should go, and who should look elsewhere

Suits this university

I

Fix the department and campus first

The timetables, interviews and teaching locations of medicine, law, humanities and war studies are far apart. Putting down King's College London does not mean one and the same route.
II

Accepts commuting along the river

It suits being compared within the same season's London group. Halls, laboratories and main courses may be on different campuses, and you must organise your own timetable.

Look elsewhere

If you care more about a relatively compact city campus with an equally wide range of subjects

UCL is usually the more direct comparison.

Common application directions

The departments and programmes that come up most often in consultations. Within one university, a different department is a different application. Course structure follows what the university's official website publishes for the year.

I

Medicine and Life Sciences

Much medical teaching takes place at Guy's, St Thomas' and Denmark Hill, not in the Strand main building. The undergraduate medical route is long, and prerequisites in chemistry and biology, the entrance test and interviews are scheduled separately, following that year's admissions statement. Life-sciences degrees are a different timetable; do not merge them with clinical medicine into one application.
II

Law

The LLB at The Dickson Poon School of Law, with case analysis, writing and argument as daily work. It is often compared with LSE's law route in the same season; the differences lie in timetable, campus and teaching style, so look at the admissions page before choosing.
III

Humanities

History, English, philosophy and so on sit in the humanities faculty, with a heavy reading load and essays as formal assessment. Neither LSE's social-science methods courses nor War Studies' conflict analysis share the same timetable.
IV

International Relations

International Relations is a separate undergraduate degree. War Studies is a three-year bachelor's degree particular to King's, looking at war and conflict through history, politics, strategy, diplomacy and ethics; the undergraduate degree has been offered since the 1990s, and teaching is mostly on the Strand. The application materials for the two do not match, so first ask which department the child wants.
