ITHE UNIVERSITY

About the university

A social-science school on Houghton Street. Economics, politics, finance and law are all here; engineering and medicine are not.

I

LSE is on Houghton Street, London, between Holborn and the legal quarter. Founded in 1895, it has long done only social science, with no engineering, medicine or architecture. The campus is compact, one building running into the next, and the proportion of international students is high. Undergraduate degrees are commonly three years, and in the first year a university-wide course, LSE100, puts different social-science methods on the same table.

II

The undergraduate economics degree (BSc Economics) runs for three years and twelve units: in the first year microeconomics, macroeconomics, econometrics, mathematics and statistics lay the foundation, and later the focus narrows. The finance degree is equally quantitative, and the mathematics on the timetable is not decoration. Politics, international relations and sociology involve heavy reading, and you must be able to write a public issue into an argument that can be defended. Law leads to the LLB, where writing and case analysis are daily work. Within the same school, preparation for the quantitative route and for the writing route is entirely different.

III

It suits a child with a sustained interest in economics, policy or public affairs. For those who want to come to London but whose subject is engineering, medicine or architecture, there is no corresponding school here. It also does not suit those whose direction is still unsettled and who only want a famous London university.

Who should go, and who should look elsewhere

Suits this university

I

A sustained interest in public affairs

Classes require reading, writing and debating. Concern that stops at slogans will not last in seminars.
II

Keeps up on at least one of quantitative work or writing

Economics and finance need mathematics and statistics. Politics, law and sociology need clear writing. If both are weak, make up the ground before talking about applying.

Look elsewhere

If you still need engineering, medicine, architecture or a wider comprehensive choice

UCL is the comprehensive option in London.

Common application directions

The departments and programmes that come up most often in consultations. Within one university, a different department is a different application. Course structure follows what the university's official website publishes for the year.

I

Economics

Three-year BSc Economics, taught on Houghton Street. The first-year core is microeconomics, macroeconomics, econometrics, mathematics and statistics, with topic courses later. Interest in business without the mathematics to keep up does not match this timetable. Look at the mathematics requirement on the admissions page before talking about 'applying to LSE'.
II

Politics and International Relations

Undergraduate politics and international relations involve a heavy load of reading and writing, and seminars are formal teaching, not an extra. You need to write a public issue into a main thread: what happened, how the parties dispute it, and on what basis you judge. It is not the same preparation path as the mathematical timetable of economics.
III

Finance

The finance degree is highly quantitative, with serious mathematics and econometrics on the timetable. The one-year taught master's in finance is counted separately, with prerequisites and language following the postgraduate admissions page. First look at which undergraduate courses the programme requires, and do not treat the words 'LSE finance' as one application.
IV

Law and Sociology

Law leads to the LLB, where case analysis, writing and argument are daily work. Sociology is another set of method courses: surveys, theory and fieldwork. There is no engineering faculty on campus to transfer to, so if after entry you want to switch to engineering or medicine, this school cannot connect.
