ITHE UNIVERSITY

About the university

A large comprehensive university in Bloomsbury. No walls and large departments: decide the subject first, then the university.

I

UCL is in Bloomsbury, London, next to the British Museum and University College Hospital. Founded in 1826, it was among the earlier institutions in England to open higher education to a broader range of students. The campus is set in the city, with no walled college town. Medicine and life sciences, engineering, architecture, education and social science can all be found here: the scale is large and so is the choice.

II

Nutrition and Medical Sciences is a three-year undergraduate degree in the medical sciences division, covering everything from cells and the human body to public nutrition. It is accredited by the Association for Nutrition (AfN), and graduates can apply to register as associate nutritionists. The telecommunications master's sits in the Department of Electronic and Electrical Engineering, one year long, with courses leaning towards network architecture and communication systems, and the undergraduate background must match. Data-science-related master's degrees are spread across statistics, computer science and other departments, with entirely different prerequisites. Architecture is also a separate faculty, and its portfolio and mathematics-and-science requirements are unrelated to an engineering application.

III

For families, UCL is often the London option where the subject is decided first and the university second. Under the same name, UCL departments differ greatly in timetable and entry requirements. For those who have settled on harder science, engineering and medicine, and want fewer choices, Imperial is more decisive.

Who should go, and who should look elsewhere

Suits this university

I

The subject is clearer than the university name

Fix the department first. Nutrition, telecommunications, data and architecture have entirely different application materials and pre-entry courses.
II

Can build a structure within a large university

Halls, commuting and the pace of the city must be counted together. Choice is wide; you must hold the main line yourself, otherwise course choices scatter easily.

Look elsewhere

If you have already chosen science, engineering or medicine and want a harder timetable with fewer choices

Imperial is more decisive.

Common application directions

The departments and programmes that come up most often in consultations. Within one university, a different department is a different application. Course structure follows what the university's official website publishes for the year.

I

Nutrition and Medical Sciences

BSc Nutrition and Medical Sciences, three years, taught in Bloomsbury. It puts nutrition science and human biomedicine together: from cell metabolism to diet and public health across life stages. Accredited by the Association for Nutrition, and the core modules must be passed to follow the route to registration as an associate nutritionist. It suits those interested in life sciences who also want a nutrition profession; it is not the same application as an ordinary biology or medicine degree.
II

Telecommunications

A taught master's in the Department of Electronic and Electrical Engineering, commonly the one-year MSc Telecommunications (including the IGDP variant with industry partners) and Telecommunications with Business. Courses cover network architecture, communication technology, planning and management. An undergraduate background in electronics, communications or a related engineering field is required; prerequisites and language requirements follow that year's postgraduate admissions page.
III

Data Science

UCL's data-science-related master's degrees are spread across statistical science, computer science and other departments, and their timetables and prerequisites differ widely. Some lean towards statistical inference, others towards machine-learning engineering. First look at which department the programme belongs to and which undergraduate courses it needs, and only then talk about 'applying to UCL data science'.
IV

Architecture and Engineering

The Bartlett (architecture) and the engineering faculty are two separate applications. Architecture looks at the portfolio and design courses; engineering looks at mathematics, physics and projects. Under the same university name the document lists do not match. First ask which building the child wants to enter.
