ITHE UNIVERSITY

About the university

A science, engineering and medicine university in South Kensington. It does almost only science, engineering, medicine and related business; the timetable is dense and laboratory-heavy.

I

Imperial is in South Kensington, London, south of Hyde Park. It received its Royal Charter in 1907 and became independent of the University of London in 2007. The university does almost only science, technology, engineering, medicine and related business, and has none of the comprehensive-university structure of exploring for four years and deciding afterwards. The campus is set within the city, with laboratories and museums a few streets apart.

II

In the first year, engineering commonly shares a core, and laboratory classes carry a large weight. Electrical and Electronic Engineering (EEE) and Electronic and Information Engineering (EIE) are similar in the first year and divide later; EIE takes courses from the computing department. Life sciences has a standalone Microbiology undergraduate degree, which treats microbes as the main subject, not a chapter of general biology. The department's master's programme Advanced Computing is for those who already have a solid computing background at undergraduate level; for a hard switch from another field, check the prerequisites first.

III

It suits families who have already chosen a science, engineering or medical route. If the direction is still unsettled, do not put it as first choice on the strength of the name alone. For those who still want to choose slowly among social science, humanities or architecture, UCL's comprehensive structure fits better.

Who should go, and who should look elsewhere

Suits this university

I

Keeps up in mathematics and science

The timetable is direct, with many laboratories and projects. If mathematics, physics or chemistry lag behind, the first year will be very hard.
II

Direction already narrowed

Most come here for engineering, science, computing or medicine. Terms are full, and you must be able to organise your own time.

Look elsewhere

If you still want to pick a direction slowly at university, or the subject falls in social science, humanities or architecture

UCL's comprehensive structure fits better.

Common application directions

The departments and programmes that come up most often in consultations. Within one university, a different department is a different application. Course structure follows what the university's official website publishes for the year.

I

Microbiology

A three-year BSc Microbiology in the Department of Life Sciences, taught in South Kensington. The course runs from cell biochemistry and genetics to the environment, biotechnology and infection, with microbes as the main thread rather than an option. At least one of chemistry, mathematics or physics must be strong. It is not the same timetable as 'general biology'.
II

Advanced Computing

The one-year MSc Advanced Computing in the Department of Computing, for those with a solid computing background from their first degree. The range of electives is wide, from software engineering and machine learning to systems, and in the summer there is an independent research project. Applicants whose first degree is not in computer science should check the prerequisites first and not expect the name of the university to fill the gap.
III

Electrical and Electronic Engineering

An undergraduate degree in the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, commonly a three-year BEng or four-year MEng; accreditation by the IET and similar bodies follows that year's statement. The first year shares an engineering core, then moves into circuits, communications and control. It is close to Electronic and Information Engineering (EIE) in the first year, and EIE takes more courses from the computing department. Families moving across into science and engineering often use it as a comparison.
