ITHE UNIVERSITY

About the university

Thirty-one colleges. Natural Sciences spreads several sciences across the first year, and the early courses in engineering and medicine are also dense.

I

Cambridge is in the city of Cambridge and, like Oxford, is a federation of colleges, thirty-one at present. Students eat and live by college, and attend lectures, laboratories and examinations by university. The Cam, the college lawns and the laboratories are two sets of daily life in one town. Applications also go through UCAS, and most science, engineering and medical subjects involve a written test and an interview.

II

Natural Sciences is Cambridge's most distinctive undergraduate structure: in the first year you choose about three courses from a basket that includes physics, chemistry, materials and physiology; in the second year you narrow; only in the third do you enter a specialism. Engineering is a separate degree with specific mathematics and physics requirements. Medicine is a long route, and the clinical stage leaves the rhythm of the undergraduate laboratory. Interviews look at the process of thinking; the best-rehearsed standard answers cannot replace reasoning on the spot.

III

When compared with Oxford in the same season, the differences lie in subject structure, interview style and college character, not in which is more famous. An application approach of 'get into a famous university first and decide the direction later' suits neither of the two.

Who should go, and who should look elsewhere

Suits this university

I

Willing to lay a wide foundation at once

The first two years of Natural Sciences and engineering carry a heavy load. Last-minute cramming will not get you through the first-year laboratories and written examinations.
II

Accepts college life

Lodging, dining hall and supervisors all revolve around the college, so the social radius is small and close. Interviews look at how you think, not at how much you have memorised.

Look elsewhere

If you would rather think one problem through in the interview, and do not want to cover several sciences at once in the first year

Compare Oxford. Look at the two in the same season; do not choose on reputation alone.

Common application directions

The departments and programmes that come up most often in consultations. Within one university, a different department is a different application. Course structure follows what the university's official website publishes for the year.

I

Natural Sciences

In the first year you choose courses from several sciences, in the second year you narrow, and only in the third do you enter a specialism. It suits those who have not yet settled between biology, physics and chemistry; for anyone who must commit on arrival to one very narrow direction, first check whether the timetable allows it.
II

Engineering

A separate engineering degree, not an option under Natural Sciences. Mathematics and physics requirements are set out in the admissions guidance, and applicants switching from computing or another field must check them against the prerequisites. Only in the last two years does it divide into civil, electrical, mechanical and so on.
III

Economics

The quantitative demands are high, and the mathematics courses are real courses, not decoration. Its character differs from the social-science discussion courses at LSE: Cambridge economics leans towards mathematical derivation. Writing and calculation both have to keep up.
IV

Medicine

The undergraduate medical route is long, and the rhythm of the pre-clinical and clinical stages is entirely different. Chemistry and biology prerequisites and interviews are scheduled separately and cannot be prepared like an ordinary science application. The entrance test for the year follows the official website.
