ITHE UNIVERSITY

About the university

Pok Fu Lam on Hong Kong Island. The first university in Hong Kong. Classes are in English; below the hill is a city of Cantonese and Putonghua.

I

HKU is at Pok Fu Lam on Hong Kong Island. Founded in 1911, it was the first university in Hong Kong. The campus is built up the hillside, and walking from the university station to the faculties means climbing. The undergraduate degree is four years, teaching is mainly in English, and daily life is lived in a city where Cantonese, Putonghua and English overlap. Medicine, business, architecture, and arts and sciences each have their own faculty, and the application materials are not one set.

II

Design+ (BASc Design+) sits in the Faculty of Architecture. It is four years and combines design studios with an interdisciplinary major, and you must also take a second major or two minors. The Master of Marketing is a taught postgraduate programme in the Business School, which looks at undergraduate grades, prerequisites and the personal statement, and is entirely a different form from undergraduate design or medicine. The admission logic of medicine and business is further apart still: one looks at science prerequisites and interviews, the other at grades, activities and quantitative courses.

III

For families from the Chinese mainland, it is often the option close to home that still requires getting through an English-language classroom. A Hong Kong university is not a transposition of the mainland gaokao, nor a UK degree scaled down by a size. GPA has to be managed from the first semester. For those who care more about college life and a balance of Chinese and English, CUHK belongs in the same season.

Who should go, and who should look elsewhere

Suits this university

I

English in the classroom is manageable

Lectures, reading and coursework are mainly in English. Cantonese and Putonghua coexist in the city, and translation software alone will not carry daily life.
II

Treats Hong Kong as a study radius

Internships, research and employment often land in Hong Kong and the Greater Bay Area. Peers compete closely, and first-semester results enter the GPA.

Look elsewhere

If you care more about college life and a balance of Chinese and English, or plan to link a bachelor's and master's in Hong Kong

CUHK is often a comparison on the same chain.

Common application directions

The departments and programmes that come up most often in consultations. Within one university, a different department is a different application. Course structure follows what the university's official website publishes for the year.

I

Design+

The four-year BASc(Design+) in the Faculty of Architecture, JUPAS code JS6236. The 96-credit major covers design thinking, materials, data and studio work, with a final-year capstone design project; you must also choose a second major or two minors. In years with a portfolio and interview, follow the admissions page. It is not the traditional five-year architecture degree, nor pure art and design, and interdisciplinary course choice must be planned from the first year.
II

Master of Marketing

A taught master's in HKU Business School, commonly one year. Admission looks at undergraduate grades, relevant courses and the personal statement, with language requirements following the postgraduate page for the year. Undergraduate GPA is a hard threshold, and the name of the university does not help. It is not the same application as undergraduate business or Design+; check the intake and prerequisites first.
III

Medicine and Business

Medicine looks at science prerequisites, interviews and the clinical route, and the programme is long. Undergraduate business looks at grades, quantitative courses and a main thread of activities. Two sets of materials and two timetables: do not sum them up as 'HKU'. The entry routes for the mainland gaokao, international curricula and non-JUPAS applicants also differ, following HKU's admissions office for the year.
