About the university

Clear Water Bay, Sai Kung. Founded in 1991, with business, engineering and computing the three clearest lines, and a campus facing the sea.

HKUST was founded in 1991. The campus is at Tai Po Tsai, on the Clear Water Bay side of Sai Kung, facing the sea, and reaching the city takes a dedicated journey. It is younger than HKU and CUHK, and smaller. The Business School, the School of Engineering, the School of Science, and the School of Humanities and Social Science admit and teach separately. The undergraduate degree is four years, with a large share of quantitative courses, and projects and research training appear from the early years.

The undergraduate business degree is not storytelling: accounting, economics and finance all have serious mathematics and statistics. Engineering looks at physics, mathematics and prerequisites, and computing at discrete mathematics, programming and projects. The application materials and the timetables after entry for the three lines are far apart. The campus is relatively self-contained, and daily life is more like a campus between mountain and sea; getting to Central takes planning.

It suits families who are already fairly clear that they will go into business, engineering or computing. For those whose direction is still unsettled and who want to choose slowly among the humanities and arts within a comprehensive university, HKU's range of subjects fits better.

Business also has mathematics and statistics. Engineering and computing need mathematics even more. If prerequisites do not match, the first year after entry will be very hard.

Most come here for business, engineering or computing. Accept a relatively self-contained campus; this is not a supermarket of subjects to browse.

Business

HKUST Business School undergraduate degrees run four years, with majors such as accounting, economics, finance and information systems separate, and the first year often has shared quantitative courses. Master's programmes include one-year taught degrees, with prerequisites and language following the postgraduate admissions page. It is often compared with HKU and CUHK business in the same season; the differences are in timetable, campus location and the weight of quantitative work.

Engineering

Undergraduate engineering looks at mathematics, physics and related prerequisites. Electronic, mechanical, civil and chemical engineering are not the same timetable, and switching direction after entry follows rules, per the school's statement. Project courses and laboratories take up time from the early years, which is not the same as the four words 'want to study engineering'.

Computing

Undergraduate computing is dense with programming, discrete mathematics and project training. It is not the same department as information management in the Business School or electronics in the School of Engineering. Those whose direction is still unsettled or whose mathematics lags should not rush at the name alone. Switching into computing or between majors must be checked separately against prerequisites.
