ITHE UNIVERSITY

About the university

A collegiate university on a hillside in Shatin. Majors are in the faculties, meals and lodging in the colleges, and courses run in both Chinese and English.

I

CUHK was formed in 1963 by the merger of colleges including Chung Chi, New Asia and United. The campus is in Shatin, built up the hillside, and the number of colleges has since grown to nine. Students have both a faculty identity and a college identity: major courses and laboratories are in the faculty, while lodging, general education and college activities are in the college. Equal weight on Chinese and English is what distinguishes it from many Hong Kong universities.

II

Psychology is a four-year undergraduate degree in the Faculty of Social Science (B.S.Sc. Psychology, JUPAS code JS4862), with a major of about 55 credits plus core courses such as the faculty package and statistics and research methods. Later it can go towards cognitive, clinical and health, or social and industrial-organisational directions. Business and medicine are a different faculty with different admission. College life and the faculty timetable must be aligned by the student, two calendars laid on top of each other.

III

Families already studying in Hong Kong, or planning to link a bachelor's and master's, often put CUHK and HKU in the same season. The difference lies in college, language and campus location, not in a line about 'which is more famous'. For those who prefer a city hill campus with English as the main language of teaching, compare HKU.

Who should go, and who should look elsewhere

Suits this university

I

Accepts two identities, college and faculty

Life is in the college, the major is in the faculty. Chinese courses, English courses and coursework can all appear, so language cannot be prepared in only one.
II

Treats Hong Kong as a stop for study or linking

It suits arrangements that complete study in Hong Kong, or a bachelor's abroad and a master's back in Hong Kong, on one timeline, and not just a university name as a stepping stone.

Look elsewhere

If you care more about a city hill campus and English as the main language of teaching, and want HKU as your first comprehensive university

Compare HKU. Look at the two in the same season; do not look only at the Chinese names.

Common application directions

The departments and programmes that come up most often in consultations. Within one university, a different department is a different application. Course structure follows what the university's official website publishes for the year.

I

Psychology

A four-year undergraduate degree in the Faculty of Social Science, JUPAS JS4862. Core courses include introductory psychology and statistics and research methods, followed by cognitive, developmental, clinical and health, and social and industrial-organisational directions. Methods courses must be kept up with from the first year; they cannot be replaced by the four words 'interested in the human mind'. A double major can be combined with linguistics, journalism and communication and others, with details following the faculty's statement for the year.
II

Social Science

Journalism, sociology, politics, global studies and others sit in the Faculty of Social Science and share the faculty package with psychology, but the major timetables differ. College general education and faculty majors are two sets of courses, and course choice must be planned from entry, otherwise the four years are crowded out by general education and the major.
III

Business and Medicine

The Business School and the Faculty of Medicine are separate applications. The medical route is long, with science prerequisites and interviews scheduled separately. Business looks at grades, quantitative courses and activities. Families often compare CUHK and HKU in the same season: match the faculty first, then the campus and the language.
