Johns Hopkins was founded in 1876 in Baltimore, Maryland, and was among the earlier American universities to centre explicitly on research. The undergraduate main campus is Homewood: arts and sciences in the Krieger School, engineering in the Whiting School. Much training in medicine, nursing and public health takes place on the medical campus in East Baltimore. SAIS, the school of advanced international studies, is mainly in Washington, and is not the same application as undergraduate arts and sciences.

Biomedical Engineering is an undergraduate degree in the Whiting School, with mathematics, physics, biology and laboratory courses advancing together; you go into the laboratory, not only to classes. Public-health-related undergraduate study is mostly Public Health Studies in the arts and sciences school, where methods courses and statistics must be kept up with from the early years; the Bloomberg School of Public Health is mainly postgraduate. The university looks at research training and the difficulty of courses, and does not sell a lively student life.

It suits a child with a sustained interest in biomedicine, public health or related research routes. If you put it down only because you heard medicine is strong, it is easy to choose the wrong school. The main campus is not in New York or Boston, and you must build your own radius of life. For those who really want intensive reading and argument rather than the laboratory, the Core at Chicago fits better.

Biomedical Engineering in the Whiting School puts engineering, mathematics and life sciences on one timetable, with a large share of laboratory and design courses. It is not the same programme as biology or pre-medicine in the arts and sciences school. Prerequisites and laboratory arrangements follow the school's statement for the year.

Public Health

The common undergraduate route is Public Health Studies in the arts and sciences school, where statistics, epidemiology and writing must all be kept up with. The Bloomberg School of Public Health is mainly for master's and doctoral degrees; do not write the reputation of the graduate school directly as an undergraduate major. Interest as a slogan is not enough, and methods courses are hard courses.

International Relations

Undergraduate international relations is in the arts and sciences school at Homewood. SAIS is a graduate school, mainly on the Washington campus with others such as Bologna, and its application form is not the same as the undergraduate one. To apply for a SAIS master's, look at the graduate admissions page first, and do not bundle it with the undergraduate degree as a single step.
