About the university

Hyde Park. The undergraduate Core stresses reading, writing and discussion, and both the social-science and quantitative routes are demanding.

I

The University of Chicago was founded in 1890, and its main campus is in Hyde Park, on the south side of Chicago. The undergraduate structure is private liberal arts plus research: every undergraduate takes a shared Core, reading primary texts, writing papers and discussing in class, and the credits are not easy. Major courses are in the departments, and social science, humanities, and economics and quantitative routes are all common.

II

Political Science is a separate department; undergraduates take methods courses in theory, comparative politics, American politics and international relations, and papers and discussion are formally assessed. The mathematical requirements of quantitative routes such as economics and statistics are equally specific. Hyde Park and downtown Chicago are two different rhythms, and you must look after your own daily life. Quick talk cannot make up for the weekly reading load.

III

For families in China, it often appears in plans that transfer to a US undergraduate track and apply with a public-affairs or academic main thread. Whether it suits depends first on whether the child can enjoy intensive reading. For those who want to treat a big city as a training ground and cannot stand the density of the Core, NYU is a different North American route.

Who should go, and who should look elsewhere

I

Willing to think a problem through

The Core and seminars set a high bar. Wanting only to finish the courses and collect credits will hit a wall here.
II

Can read it and write it

The weekly reading is heavy. A public-affairs or subject main thread must be something you can write and defend in class.

Look elsewhere

If you would rather treat a big city as a training ground, and cannot stand the reading density of the Core

NYU's city campus is a different North American route.

Common application directions

The departments and programmes that come up most often in consultations. Within one university, a different department is a different application. Course structure follows what the university's official website publishes for the year.

I

Political Science

The undergraduate political science department has methods courses across theory, comparative, American politics and international relations. The Core still requires reading primary texts and writing papers, and a major does not exempt you from it. When applying to a US undergraduate programme, a public-affairs main thread that you can write clearly helps; piling up activities does not help with the reading load.
II

Social Science

Sociology, anthropology, history and related majors likewise run on the Core plus a major. Reading, writing and argument are daily work. It does not share the character of a school with career-training business courses.
III

Quantitative and Economics

Economics, statistics and related quantitative majors have specific mathematical requirements; calculus and advanced mathematics should be prepared following the admissions and department statements. Chicago's quantitative route is equally demanding, and it is not the same thing as 'interested in business'.
