ITHE UNIVERSITY

About the university

Washington Square has no walls. Classrooms and the city overlap: fix the school within NYU first, then talk about NYU.

I

NYU was founded in 1831, and its main campus is in Greenwich Village, Manhattan, around Washington Square. There is no traditional wall, and classrooms, halls and the city overlap. It is large, and each school admits separately: the College of Arts and Science (CAS), the Stern School of Business, the Tisch School of the Arts and the Steinhardt School each have different materials, portfolios and timetables.

II

The full name of Steinhardt is the School of Culture, Education, and Human Development. It began in 1890 with education, and today has more than thirty undergraduate majors, with applied psychology, media, culture and communication, education, nutrition and music all under this school. Writing 'Steinhardt' is not the same as naming a major. CAS is a separate liberal arts application, and Stern and Tisch are further apart in entry bar and portfolio requirements.

III

It suits a child who can find their own structure in a big city. Cost of living, internships and coursework all arrive together. For those who need a stronger academic structure and cannot take a campus without walls, the Core at Chicago will hold a person in reading and argument.

Who should go, and who should look elsewhere

Suits this university

I

Can manage yourself in the city

Temptation and opportunity are just outside the door. You must hold your own routine, coursework and lodging; the university will not lock you in with a wall.
II

Fix the school first, then talk about the university

You want to treat New York as a training ground. Internships, projects and cultural resources are close, and the child must go out and use them.

Look elsewhere

If you need a stronger academic structure, and cannot take a city campus without walls

The Core at Chicago will hold a person in reading and argument.

Common application directions

The departments and programmes that come up most often in consultations. Within one university, a different department is a different application. Course structure follows what the university's official website publishes for the year.

I

Steinhardt: Education and Human Development

Steinhardt is a school, not the name of a major. Its undergraduate degrees include applied psychology, media, culture and communication, education, nutrition, and several in art and music, more than thirty in all, and some require a portfolio or an audition. An application must name a specific major. It is not the same admission line as CAS, Stern or Tisch.
II

Arts and Science

CAS (College of Arts and Science) is NYU's undergraduate liberal arts college, where economics, politics, computer science and the humanities sit. It is not the same application as Stern business, Tisch arts, or Steinhardt's education and communication. First ask which school the child will enter.
III

Business and the Arts

Stern looks at grades, quantitative work and activities; Tisch looks at portfolios, auditions or work. The document lists do not match, and you cannot sum them up as 'NYU'. Language, intake and cost of living should be counted together with the school.
