ITHE UNIVERSITY

About the university

One university, three campuses. St George, Mississauga and Scarborough share a Toronto degree, but where classes are held and how life runs is not one set.

I

The predecessor of the University of Toronto was King's College of 1827. Today it is a large public university with a collegiate federal structure, and undergraduates are spread across three campuses: St George in the city centre, Mississauga (UTM) to the west and Scarborough (UTSC) to the east. All three award University of Toronto degrees, but the course calendars, campuses and commuting are entirely different.

II

St George is the densest: Arts and Science, Applied Science and Engineering, Rotman business and others are all around here, and competition and course-choice pressure are greatest. UTM and UTSC have their own courses and faculty structures, and class sizes and the time to reach the city centre differ. Ask which campus first, and only then talk about the major. With many people and many courses, those who actively seek out supervisors and peers adapt better.

III

For families in China, it is often the North American option where grades, time and budget must all work at once. Visas, seasons and onward exits must be counted together with grades. For those who prefer a private city campus and can bear the cost of New York, NYU is another route.

Who should go, and who should look elsewhere

Suits this university

I

Ask which campus before asking which university

St George and the two satellite campuses differ in courses, commuting and density of competition. Putting down Toronto does not mean one and the same route.
II

Can find supervisors and peers within a large university

There are many courses and many people. Grades are only one item; visas, seasons and onward exits must be looked at together.

Look elsewhere

If you would rather have a private city campus, and can bear the pace and cost of New York

NYU is another North American route.

Common application directions

The departments and programmes that come up most often in consultations. Within one university, a different department is a different application. Course structure follows what the university's official website publishes for the year.

I

St George campus

The main campus in the city centre. Arts and Science, engineering, Rotman business and the professional faculties are mostly here, and competition for courses is dense. Engineering and Arts and Science are applications to different faculties. First see which faculty the child is entering, then halls and commuting.
II

Mississauga campus (UTM)

The satellite campus in the western suburbs, with the same Toronto degree. Course calendar, classes and the time to reach the city centre differ from St George. Some majors are offered only at UTM, or the early years are at the satellite campus and the later years transfer, following the faculty's statement. Do not treat the three campuses as halls that can be swapped freely.
III

Scarborough campus (UTSC)

The satellite campus in the eastern suburbs, also awarding a Toronto degree. Co-operative education and some distinctive programmes are more common at UTSC. Ask first which campus the four years will mostly be spent on, then talk about majors and internships.
